Wonder: Interlude 1

From a very young age, I loved Puff the Magic Dragon. It filled my head with the visions of a magical land, of dragons and knights, of a place where maybe I was lucky enough to go on adventures and play without care.

  1. Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
  2. And frolicked in the autumn mist, in a land called Honnah Lee
  3. Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff
  4. And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff, oh!
  1. Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
  2. And frolicked in the autumn mist, in a land called Honnah Lee
  3. Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
  4. And frolicked in the autumn mist, in a land called Honnah Lee
  1. Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
  2. Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff’s gigantic tail
  3. Noble kings and princes would bow whene’er they came
  4. Pirate ships would lower their flags when Puff roared out his name, oh!
  1. Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
  2. And frolicked in the autumn mist, in a land called Honnah Lee
  3. Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
  4. And frolicked in the autumn mist, in a land called Honnah Lee
  1. A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
  2. Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys
  3. One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
  4. And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar
  1. His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain
  2. Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane
  3. Without his life-long friend, Puff could not be brave
  4. So Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave, oh!
  1. Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
  2. And frolicked in the autumn mist, in a land called Honnah Lee
  3. Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
  4. And frolicked in the autumn mist, in a land called Honnah Lee

Hearing Peter, Paul and Mary sing Puff as an adult, I dread every day that passes where Leo loses a little bit more of his sense of wonder, of the innocence of youth, of every child’s ability to experience everything new with curiousity.

My new goal: balancing the reality of Leo growing older with the power of imagination.
